“They Went From Cumbria” is the first published output of my long-term project on the history of the Christian Brethren (aka “Open Brethren”) in the North of England. I hope to follow it within a few months with the first of several books on the origins of several individual churches (“assemblies”) in Cumbria.

This small volume focuses on the lives of a selection of the men and women who went as missionaries to many countries around the world. The date range I have chosen is from the mid/late-19th century to the mid-20th century. Other individuals and other countries could have been included but it would then be a much bigger book and I wanted to illustrate the extent and variety of work that had been done in a concise volume.

Starting with Elizabeth Wilson of Kendal and Shap, and concluding with Joyce Shackley of Workington these pages describe mission work of different kinds in countries from China to Borneo, and from India to South America.  There were preachers, teachers, nurses, translators and more. Read their stories and be amazed at their dedication to service in an era when travel and life generally was much harder than today.
