This is a short post to announce the publication of the latest book in my series, “Brethren of the North“, recounting the history of churches that grew out of the Christian Brethren movement in the 19th century.
The first volume, “They Went From Cumbria“, contained brief biographies of a selection of missionaries who went to various parts of the world between approximately 1850 and 1960. “This”West Cumbria Brethren” now tells the stories of the early years (up to the start of the 20th century) of two of the churches from which they went, in Whitehaven and Workington, plus three others in Keswick, Cockermouth and Frizington.
This book is the outcome of years of research into original documents, old newspapers and magazines, books, family history resources in libraries, official archives, online, and more. At last I am ready to tell the stories.
“West Cumbria Brethren” is available from Amazon in both the UK (£7.99) and North America ($9.99).

If you don’t already have a copy, why not also buy the first volume, “They Went From Cumbria“ telling the stories of evangelical missionary nurses, teachers, translators, preachers and more in countries around the world, and who went from Cumbria, including from two of the churches (in Whitehaven and Workington) whose early histories are described in “West Cumbria Brethren”.
